Miss Detective Tori, # 2 THE CASE OF THE STOLEN DIAMOND MASK

“Hey”, Jay said, as he came up the porch. I was sleeping in the hammock, watching the big waves spill out. “Hi”, I greeted him. He sat down next to me. “Where’s your cousin”? He asked. “Shelly? Oh, she went to the masquerade exhibition”, I replied. “Cool… She didn’t ask you to come”? Jay asked me. “Nah, she was going with her old pals”, I said. “Oh”. Jay said. He was silent for a long time, with only my humming around. “Can I call her on your Iphone”? Jay asked. “Yeah, sure”. I dug around for my hot pink Iphone, but when I handed it to Jay, it rang. “It’s… Shelly calling”, Jay said, as he picked up the phone. “Hello? Hi. What? That’s horrible! Okay, Tori and I will be there in a minute. Hang on”. Jay handed me the phone. “The diamond mask had been stolen! The thief kept a replica instead. When Princess of England reached for it, the mask was being projected! Let’s go”! I gasped, and I scrambled onto my feet. I grabbed my detective bag, and scribbled a note saying:
Hi Mum. I have gone out with Jay and Shelly. I’ll come back by 7:00. I took the spare keys. I hope you have your pair. See ya!

I stuck the note onto the door, and locked it. We both called a cab, and we rode to the exhibition. We spotted Shelly, with a bunch of girls. “Guys! Come on”! Shelly urged us, and she led us into the Princess’s green room. The Princess was crying. “No! It’s impossible”! The head of the masquerade, yelled into his phone. “But it was right there! Manny and Clark, the Princess’s two guards were guarding it! Right”! The head clicked his phone. “My highness! The detective squad is coming”! The head bowed. “No! It can’t be”! The princess shrieked. “The detective squad”? Jay whispered, and we went back into the hall. Niha, our friend we had rescued, joined us. “Hey guys”! She waved. “Hi! We have a problem”! Shelly said, and she explained what had happened. Niha nodded. “I know the Princess. Such a bragger! I hope she’ll remember me”, Niha said, and we showed her the green room. “Hi Evangeline! How are you”? Niha acted as if the princess was her best friend. The princess dabbed her eyes daintily with her hand kerchief. “Oh Niha! This is horrible!” she wailed. As the princess told her story, we crept out to the crime scene. Clark and Manny looked outraged. I flipped out my suspects’ book. “Who do we have first”? I asked. “The head herself”? Jay suggested. “But how is that possible when”- Shelly began, but I wrote it in anyways. “The watchman”, Shelly said. “Or Manny and Clark”, I added. I pulled out my magnifying glass. “Finger prints”! Jay said in a loud voice. We looked at all the case where the diamond mask had been. “A clue”! Shelly yelled, and she showed us a finger print which beautifully lay on the glass. “Great”! Jay grinned, and he slapped Shelly on the back. Shelly laughed, and we spotted two detectives entering. “Of course, Liz, we’ll charge… eight dollars per three minutes”, the detectives were saying. “What? That’s not a nice deal”! The head yelled. “Too bad, honey”, the detective muttered. Just then, I spotted a tiny piece of a handkerchief on the ground. “I’ll go around asking people for their handkerchief”, Jay suggested. “Okay. Just remember: White kerchief, pink flower”, Shelly reminded him, and Jay set off. Niha joined us with the preppy fourteen year old princess. The princess wore a long black dress and a crystal tiara on her blonde silky hair. She was very fare, and when she walked, she danced so gracefully on the floor. “You are the detective squad”? The princess sniffed. “Find my mask! I want my mask”! The princess burst into tears. “I love that mask! Diamonds, beautiful”! Niha tried to calm the Princess down, by handing her a napkin to wipe her face. “Niha! Is that napkin yours”? Shelly cried. “No! It’s mine”! The princess said, flipping out a powder compos, and she touched her face with her puff. “Yes, of course. Here is pretty Evangeline”, the princess mumbled. “Um… princess? Were you anywhere near the mask”? Shelly asked. “Of course not”! The princess quickly said, and she flounced away. “I think there’s something wrong with your friend, Niha”, Shelly muttered. “Can I have that napkin you are holding”? Niha nodded, and she gave her the napkin. Shelly took my magnifying glass. “Hmmm… Same prints”! Shelly yelled, giving it to me. “Right! So it all makes sense”! I replied. “What”? Shelly and Niha said together. “First, Niha, go check the princess’s ID card. Shelly, you go tell everything to Jay. I’ll do my work”. They nodded, and we scurried off into all directions. I skipped over to the head. “Hello! I am your free detective”! I said, cheerfully. “How old are you”? The head asked, suspiciously. “I’m twelve”, I said. “Twelve? Stop bothering me kid”, the head returned to her papers. “I solved your case”, I said. “Oh right”. The head brushed me away. I grinned. I had expected this. “Manny, Clark”! I yelled to the guards. The guards were surprised. “Oh please! Don’t tell”! Manny yelled, falling onto my feet. I backed away. “I know you figured out that Gabrielle has kidnapped the real princess and she stole the mask herself”! Clark sobbed. “Aha”! I yelled, and leaving them crying, I rushed into the princess’s green room. “I’ve got you Gabrielle”! I yelled. Gabrielle looked up, outraged. “What”? She yelled. “Kids”! Gabrielle got up, and she slipped a sleek black gun out of her purse. She held it to my head. “You’re gonna die”! She yelled, and before she could shoot, police scrambled into the room. “Hands up”! They cried, cornering her. She dropped her gun. Manny and Clark followed the last police, with their hands tied up. “You idiots! You told our secret”! Gabrielle screamed. “Where’s the mask, sweetie”? A female police asked, with her hands on her hips. “I’m not telling”! Gabrielle screamed. “In the lounge”! Clark blabbered. “Where”? The police whipped out her gun, pointing at Gabrielle. “No! Don’t shoot me! I’ll tell! It’s under the sofa”! Gabrielle sobbed. Shelly, Niha and Jay who joined the scene, burst out in laughter. “Kids”! Gabrielle screamed on the top of her lungs. “Under the sofa is not really a smart place”! Niha confessed. Gabrielle scowled, as they dragged her out of the room. “Thank you, kids”, the officer said, smiling. “She’s a major wanted criminal. It seems the real princess escaped, and she’s arriving soon. What would you like as an award”? We just grinned. “We don’t need anything”, I said. “We need an award”, Niha said. “I’ll take you all for Ice cream”! So, we ended up sitting in the ice cream parlor, eating six or seven ice creams each! Yeah, Ice Cream!
